What has the market square in Wernigerode not experienced? Jugglers once performed here in today's town hall, which was built in the 13th century as the "Spelhus". Major town fires in 1528 and 1847 destroyed much of the town, but today's Gothisches Haus was spared thanks to its strong firewalls. The aldermen still dined in the wine cellar and everywhere in Wernigerode you can feel the exciting history at every turn.
Stroll past historic churches, half-timbered houses with artistic reliefs, towers of the old town wall and the benefactors' fountain, built in 1848, which honors all those who have rendered outstanding services to Wernigerode. Today, small manufactories invite you to shop, concerts and festivals delight visitors, while pottery and chocolate markets take place amidst the historic backdrop.
