Where Germany ends and Denmark is within touching distance. Here, at the northernmost tip of the island, the world seems to stand still at the ‘Königshafen’ car park. As soon as you’ve passed the toll booth, the road belongs to the sheep – they doze in the middle of the tarmac, completely unperturbed by anything.

At the very edge, where the North Sea and the Wadden Sea meet, the water glows a deep blue, almost like a mountain lake. Swimming is prohibited here – the undercurrent leaves no room for experimentation. But the meditative power of this place? Priceless. A detail for connoisseurs: keep an eye out for the small, wind-bent salt marsh plants just behind the first row of dunes – in late summer they bloom in a delicate shade of lilac and quietly speak of the island’s rugged beauty.

The true luxury of Kampen lies beneath the 30-metre-high cliff between the Quermarkenfeuer and the ‘Uwe Dune’. Anyone who makes their way down from the car park in the late afternoon will see just how the Red Cliff lives up to its name: as the sun sinks low, the iron oxide in the rock begins to glow in an intense shade of red – a natural spectacle you’ll never forget.

This stretch of beach is one of the most beautiful on Sylt, not only because of the dramatic backdrop but also because of its special atmosphere: here, the colours of the sky meet the glowing red of the cliff, and the sea shimmers in every shade from grey to turquoise.

A wide sandy beach, gentle waves and the iconic stainless-steel slide that leads straight down into the soft sand from the main beach access point. Nothing sounds better than the laughter of children hurtling straight down the slide, whilst the adults obediently use the steps.

Wenningstedt is one of Sylt’s most beautiful beaches for families, as the surf here is often gentler than in neighbouring Westerland. Along the promenade, little beach bistros tempt visitors with North Sea classics: a portion of rice pudding with cinnamon and sugar, feet in the sand, gazing out to sea. That’s all you need.

A tip for connoisseurs: a few hundred metres further north, it becomes noticeably quieter. If you’ve got time to spare, you might sometimes find fossilised treasures in the surf zone at low tide – little reminders of times gone by, revealed by the North Sea.

Here, the island is just 500 metres wide. The North Sea to the west, the Wadden Sea to the east. Rantum is the place where you can feel the raw power of the elements most intensely. As you stroll through the ‘Kersig settlement’ – affectionately known as ‘The Shire’ by locals because of its thatched-roof houses nestled deep within the dunes – you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. The path to the beach leads across high wooden walkways. You can hear the gentle lapping of the Wadden Sea to the east and, at the same time, the deep rumble of the surf to the west. A place of power, and for many, one of Sylt’s most beautiful beaches. The stretch of beach near the legendary ‘Sansibar’ holds a magical attraction for those who know the island well. After a long walk through the sand, that first sip tastes particularly good here.

A tip for connoisseurs: in Rantum, there’s a beach sauna right by the sea. The walk from the hot cabin into the cold North Sea: a moment you’ll never forget.

In the very south, Sylt reveals its rugged, unspoilt side. The ‘Odde’, the southern tip of the island, is getting smaller every year. The winter storms relentlessly erode the sand. Anyone walking around it starts at Hörnum harbour with its red-and-white lighthouse and needs a good two hours to explore the tip of the island.

The route first takes you through the village, then continues along the beach between the North Sea and the dunes, past small thatched-roof houses, towards the southern tip. Once you reach the southernmost point of the island, your gaze sweeps across the neighbouring islands of Amrum and Föhr. On a clear day, you can even make out the individual beach chairs on the shore. The return journey takes you along the eastern side, with calmer surf and a view of the lighthouse, until the harbour beckons with Sylt mussels and crêpes.

A tip for connoisseurs: visit the “Arche Wattenmeer”. Here, in a wooden building just behind the dyke, the North Sea tells its own story. More tangible than anywhere else.
